A message from Mona Locke, Executive Director

Mona LockeDear Friends,

It has been a busy summer season for your Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure as we wrap up a successful 2008 Race for the Cure® . With your help, we have reached our goal of raising $2 million dollars! As you know, 25% of the net revenue will go to National Komen to be spent on groundbreaking breast cancer research. The other 75% of the funds stays here locally to support programs that educate women about the importance of breast health and help them gain access to low- or no-cost life-saving mammograms. Thank you for your support.

This year, more than 4,000 women in Washington State will hear the devastating diagnosis that they have breast cancer. This disease will affect 11 families each and every day in our state. Please know that Komen Puget Sound is fighting every day to find the cures and save lives.

Since last fall, the organization has realigned our granting priority and focus. With approval from the board, we are now dedicating the majority of our grants to support breast health and education, as well as to pay for mammograms. It is our hope and belief that with limited dollars to spend, your money is most precious and effective when it goes directly to saving lives.

Of course, our volunteers are the most valuable members of the Komen family. We would like to thank them for their time and dedication. Without the 500 volunteers who helped out on Race day and without the dozens of volunteers who come through the doors of our office to help out on a regular basis, we could not be as effective, efficient or energized in our efforts.

We look forward to a productive fall and all of our activities that come with breast cancer awareness month in October: the Survivors' Brunch, the Tacoma Lunch for a Cure and the Bellevue Power of a Promise Lunch. We hope to see you at one or all of these events so that together, we can share in the joy, sorrow, inspiration and hope of life.

Sincerely,

Mona Locke
Executive Director
